A Day In The Life Of A King's College CompSci #35 (ADITLOAKCCS)

As Salamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh World!

Today was slightly embarrassing, in my hour's foundations of computing tutorial at 9am (which was the only thing I had today), I completely messed up on a question the tutor asked.

Basically, the question was on trees, something I was well acquainted with in my A level studies so I just put my hand up for a question which asked the post order traversal of a given tree.

I got it so wrong the tutor had to write down the algorithm on the board and went through it with me in front of the whole class. Normally, I wouldn't really mind getting something wrong so horrendously in front of everyone but this was stuff I done before, thus the annoyance at myself for forgetting it completely.

To be fair, I was suffering from a lack of sleep but anyway, lesson learnt. Always stay humble. That's all for today, before sure to check out day 36's post on Monday.

Hope this helps!

As Salamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh World!

Well, we just got set our second assessed coursework for the Elementary Logic module yesterday and it looks pretty insane compared to the last one.

Firstly, every singe question has multiple possible answers unlike the previous one where a lot of them only had one answer. Obviously, the difficulty of the questions itself is also significantly greater. I used to think this module was relatively easy but boy was I wrong.

I think at the end of the semester I'll do a review of each module so potential students in future years will know when things are supposed to be easy, and when they're going to get a lot harder.

Hope this helps!

A Day In The Life Of A King's College CompSci #33 (ADITLOAKCCS)

As Salamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu World!

day 33 consisted of a 2 hour programming lab in which I mostlu worked on my assignment, naturally. I say mostly since it's hard not to get distracted thus my efficiency was probably 80% or so. All in all it was a good day i guess.

Hope this helps!

A Day In The Life Of A King's College CompSci #32 (ADITLOAKCCS)

As Salamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu World!

day 32 was interesting, not the lecture on the day itself but the journey to uni definitely was. The lecture, which was one of the last of the Computer Systems module, was mostly A level content with a few new concepts that seemed relatively easy.

Anyway, on the way there was a white carriage lead by 4 white horses on the road, and in the carriage was a coffin which was followed by a black limousine. Normally, funeral processions just transport the coffin in a limousine but this was the first time I saw otherwise.

I personally think it's irresponsible to do that since horses can only travel no more than 5mph I would think, not whilst running of course. So, bringing a carriage led by 4 walking horses on a 50mph road is genuinely inconsiderate of fellow motorists.

Sure it wasn't during peak hours (around 2pm to be precise), but people have still have to be places and the last thing they would expect is a long queue of cars due to said horses. Anyway, I still got to my lecture on time (just about) so it didn't impact my journey too much but it's still a bit surprising to me how horses are allowed on A roads with relatively high speed limits.

Hope this helps!

A Day In The Life Of A King's College CompSci #31 (ADITLOAKCCS)

As Salamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu World!

a very wet and bleak Monday. Today's weather was basically winter's way of saying hello. I mean, it's hard to classify when the seasons actually change since British weather is so abnormal but in my opinion, autumn usually ends before December so I guess it makes sense.

Apart from the weather, the day was pretty normal. Actually, it was slightly better since, I actually used my 4 hour break between 11am and 3pm productively for once.

I can't say the same for the lectures on either side of that break but overall I guess it was a pretty decent day. The weather on the way home was even more cold which was indecorous to say the least.

I guess I'll just have to get used to it

Hope this helps!

A Day In The Life Of A King's College CompSci #30 (ADITLOAKCCS)

As Salamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu World!

It's becoming increasingly more difficult to blog whilst on the train due to the weather becoming colder by the day. So, to avoid potential frostbite (sarcasm) , I've decided to write these on my phone so I can keep one glove on whilst doing so.

Of course, the issue with writing anything of note on your phone is the dreaded auto correct. Anyway, this is for day 30 if memory serves.

In the morning I had a 2 hour computer systems lab from 9 to 11 which was, at first, really confusing since I reset my Arduino in the previous lab. But, after rewiring everything, it all started to make sense and I could get on with the work which was to code a piece wise function in assembly code.

After that followed a 2 hour break which I used pretty well by working on my programming assignment. Here's a tip for A level computer science coursework in general, coding games might seem like a fun idea at first but trust me, it's very repetitive to program.

Anyway, there was programming lecture for an hour at 1pm which was really forgettable so I won't go into what it was about (something to do with arrays I think).

Then there was an hour break after which followed the standard 3 hour session of foundations of computing which was so basic, even the lecturer said today's lecture is the easiest topic in the module. Plus I had already done the topic in A level computer science so it was even more straightforward.

that's all for today, be sure to check out day 31's post too.

Hope this helps

A Day In The Life Of A King's College CompSci #29 (ADITLOAKCCS)

As Salamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu World!

Today was surprisingly productive, I worked pretty much all the way through my 2 hour programming lab and here I am on the train, finally catching up (again) on the daily blogs. Truth be told, the test I sat yesterday did give a reality check like never before.

So, despite not getting full marks due to silly mistakes, I am grateful. After all, anyone who hasn’t made any mistakes has never tried anything new (or something like that) right?

Hope this helps!

A Day In The Life Of A King's College CompSci #28 (ADITLOAKCCS)

As Salamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu World!

Well, I just had the test today and I honestly think there wasn’t enough time. For 6 multiple choice questions, 30 minutes is not nearly enough. Anyway, it went well all things considered but I just had to guess the last question since I was almost out of time.

This is the first time the module is being examined in this way so it’s safe to say they haven’t even considered how long it actually takes to do the test. Sure, you only get 6 marks worth of questions but the actual time it takes to work out the answers is a bit longer than the allocated 5 minutes per question.

I guess I’m just annoyed at my poor time management skills, something I thought I mastered during my A levels but evidently, those skills eluded me during the test. I suppose a small consolation is the fact that the test only counts as 10% of the module so not getting full marks isn’t a complete disaster.

After the test, there was a 90 minute break in which I basically done nothing since I was still annoyed and even in the computer systems lecture that followed, I didn’t really pay attention. Here’s a tip; ignorance is bliss. As tempting as it may be to ask everyone their answers, don’t.

You’ll soon realise that you didn’t get the marks you initially thought and then be gutted for however long it takes for you to get over it. Which, in my case, was the remainder of the day.

Anyway, this serves as a valuable lesson for the programming module test which is on December 11. That’s all for today.

Hope this helps!

A Day In The Life Of A King's College CompSci #27 (ADITLOAKCCS)

As Salamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu World!

I would be inclined to say today (despite being a Monday) was pretty normal when it was anything but. The second programming assignment was set today which is to make an adventure game of sorts. Coding games might seem fun at first but it’s really repetitive in actuality.

Anyway, that’s due in 3 weeks so I’m not too worried about that right now. What matters is the first class test is tomorrow for the Foundations of Computing module. In case you didn’t know already, this is mostly discrete maths so it can be incredibly boring but equally easy if you’re good at statistics.

There’s also the second coursework for the Elementary Logic module being assigned next week so it’s safe to say there are some busy times ahead. I personally don’t get the point of having tests around Christmas time. They should all be after the holidays.

I think I’ll do a review of all the modules I’m doing so far at the end of the semester but for now, all I can say is this since there’s a test tomorrow and I’m freaking out slightly since I haven’t sat an exam since the summer.

Hope this helps!

A Day In The Life Of A King's College CompSci #26 (ADITLOAKCCS)

As Salamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu World!

Fridays, for me at least, are the most pointless. One Friday I have off but the other I only have an hour's tutorial on foundations of computing. At 9 in the morning as well. So, imagine travelling for 2 hours just to get 1 hour's worth of teaching.

Makes no sense to me but I already missed Wednesday so I had to go I guess. It was definitely worth it, as all tutorials are pretty much.

Hope this helps!

A Day In The Life Of A King's College CompSci #25 (ADITLOAKCCS)

As Salamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu World!

Day 25. A Wednesday. NOT. There was a strike so I decided for the first time to skip the day since I only had a 2 hour programming lab in the morning. Unlike school, skipping university is expensive. You're paying 9k a year for this so it's best to make the most of it.

Anyway, day 25 was actually a Thursday. A not too memorable one mind you. I can barely remember anything in fact, but by looking at my timetable I can see that I had 2 lectures; one for programming and the other for foundations of computing which were equally unmemorable I guess.

This is why I should do the blog for the day immediately instead of a couple of days later.

Hope this helps!

A Day In The Life Of A King's College CompSci #24 (ADITLOAKCCS)

As Salamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu World!

Day 24 and guess what. My personal tutor didn't even turn up for our discussion that only happens 4 times a year so that wasn't a great start to the day. Especially considering that the day would normally begin 2 hours later with a 3pm lecture.

Anyway, this is the third time this situation has occurred in about 25 days so it's a bit disconcerting to say the least. The lecture itself wasn't amazing either but hey, at least it got me back into my work routine.

Hope this helps!

A Day In The Life Of A King's College CompSci #23 (ADITLOAKCCS)

As Salamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu World!

Well, it's been a week since reading week ended which means I have to do 5 posts before tomorrow so let's go. The first Monday back was slightly peculiar if memory serves. There was absolutely minimal traffic so I actually got to a 9am lecture early for once. It was really strange, I don't ever remember the roads being so clear at peak hours.

Anyway, the day itself was pretty okay. Truth be told, I was actually looking forward to going back to uni after reading week; no idea why. Ah, now it dawns upon me. The reason was mainly due to me not doing any work whatsoever during reading week.

Well, I did some work, but nearly not enough as I hoped to. Regardless, my work ethic and general routine in fact was completely ruined during reading week. So, my recommendation to everyone is simple; just pretend it's not reading week. Don't take one day off then say to yourself you'll do work later. Do not do that. Trust me. Keep the rhythm going and carry on working as before.

Even in the 4 hour break between my 2 lectures I got basically nothing done which was annoying so believe me, take reading week seriously. Obviously if you've done all your work beforehand and have nothing to catch up on then I guess you can afford not to. But, even then you're potentially jeopardising your routine so I would take caution

That's all for day 23, hope this helps!
